Open Educational Resources (OER) @ Drake

This guide is an introduction to Open Educational Resources (OER): what they are, where to find them, and how to use them in courses. Please contact Teri Koch, teri.koch@drake.edu, 271-2941 with any questions or to learn more.

GEER Grant-2 (I-COER) Description

  • Governor's Emergency Education Relief (GEER)
  • Participants: both private academics and community colleges: Grand View, Drake, Buena Vista, Mt. Mercy, DMACC, and Kirkwood Community College combined together to apply for and receive a $70,000 GEER grant. We called this group: I-COER (Iowa Cross Institutional Open Education Resouces)
  • Project summary: Capacity-building & professional development to....”create enthusiasm for and increase knowledge of OER at each institution.”
  • Grant provided funding for grants up to $1000 to eight faculty. Some institutions funded their own faculty so more than eight could attend. For example, Drake funded nine additional faculty.
  • Participant Activities:
  • Meet monthly through Fall 2021 & Spring 2022 in discipline-based peer groups (led by a facilitator from each participating institution, usually a librarian) to discuss and learn about OER in their respective disciplines. Teri Koch led the Business Faculty Peer Group, and Andrew Welch led the English Faculty Peer Group.
  • Participate in workshops led by nationally recognized OER leaders. Robin DeRosa (fall 2021) & Rajiv Jhangiani (spring 2022)
  • Write a book review of an OER from the Open Education Network (OEN) or other reputable source.
  • Share experience in program with colleagues at home institution (e.g., workshop, presentation, etc.)(spring 2022) (see presentations below)
  • Participants were encouraged to adopt an OER for one (or more) Spring 2022 courses
  • Grant recipients each received a $500 stipend for the Fall 2021 semester, and a $500 stipend for the spring 2022 semester when all activities were completed.
